My high school History teacher assigned my class to ask a veteran about their service. My dad told me his brother Slats had served in Africa with the Big Red 1 during WWII. My dad drove me over to Uncle Slats house to interview him the following day. After a few basic questions, I apprehensively asked, “Did you ever kill anyone?”
Uncle Slats got real quiet. Then, in a soft voice, he said, Probably.
"I was the cook.”
