Modified Helmet Liner – Drill Sergeant/Instructor Style
Often seen among drill instructors who wanted the imposing appearance of wearing a heavy steel helmet all day, these liners were cleverly modified to look like a standard M1 shell when worn. This particular example is an original from the early 1970s, adapted so that a steel helmet chinstrap could be attached to the metal loops. Once a camo cover was draped over it, no one could tell it wasn’t a steel pot.
Condition:
-
Relic state: The webbing is missing, and the neckband buckles have rust.
- The round discs for accepting the removable web kit are still intact, allowing for a possible rebuild if desired.
A fascinating piece of military ingenuity and a unique collector’s item for those interested in drill instructor or M1 helmet history.
